Ballard Locks

Today’s post takes us to the place where my, then fiance and I addressed our wedding invitations. The Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Gardens are lovely to wander. The fauna unique to the Northwest. On the water-side of the garden is the United States busiest locks. The Hiram M. Chitterden Locks, more commonly referred to as the Ballard Locks (named for the neighborhood where it’s located). I’ve traveled these locks in two different sailboats. One that was purchased in Lake Washington and then sailed, powered to Bellingham, Washington.
But the joy of these locks, shared by anyone willing to make the journey, is in watching vessels of all sizes. Commercial, military and civil lifted onto Lake Union or dropped gently into Puget Sound.
These images are of an ocean-going tug headed to Alaska after a short re-provisioning in Lake Union.
