Cottonwood. The wood is soft. It is difficult to cut well. The top on this piece is very nice. The sides reveal the more challenging side of working with this wood. I turns out that working with this wood is like cutting sandpaper with really sharp metal. The metal dulls quickly. Turns out, cottonwood has a high content of silica in its’ structure. I like the shape, the spalting, even the chunk that broke out of the base. If no one buys this one – that will be okay. It can live on my mantle. Or in the family display case of my prized turnings. I like this piece.
